Guard styles include mesh screens, perforated metal, foam inserts and solid hoods. Each one is cleaned differently. If you do not know the style, a phone photo of the roof edge taken from the ground often helps.

Mention too if the guards came with the house or were added later, and whether the installer gave you any care instructions. Some installers expect a particular method of cleaning, and it helps us to know before we start.

Why quotes can be higher

Lifting guards, brushing them, clearing the trough underneath and refitting each piece takes longer than emptying an open gutter. A guarded system is often quoted higher for that reason, by any company.

Ask whether a quote covers removing and replacing the guards, or just rinsing the top surface. A surface rinse can leave debris underneath that you only discover later.

It also helps to ask whether you will be told about a guard that is damaged or poorly fitted, since that influences whether future visits are worth it. We will point out what we see; we do not install or replace guards.

Deciding whether guards are worth keeping

Guards reduce the volume of leaves but do not remove the need for upkeep. In a place with heavy oak and pine pollen in spring, a thin film can still form on top.
